Diary of Hackers Launches a Youth Led Cybersecurity Awareness and Capacity Building Initiative.

With the ever-growing dependence on technology, without doubt, the internet provides us with unprecedented access to information that was previously out of reach, makes our lives flexible, easier and makes operations faster from e-commerce to entertainment.

The digital economy is growing in Africa with 44% internet penetration in Africa, it is no doubt that technology is evolving, however, this benefit come with the rise of sophisticated cyber threats with Cybercrime as a multi-billion dollar industry. It has become imperative to respond to these threats in protecting digital trust in today’s world. In a recent report by Interpol, they recognized that fighting cybercrime is a collective effort.

Diary of Hackers, an award winning cybersecurity community that aims
to promote cybersecurity education and capacity building is kickstarting a Cybersecurity Education Initiative (CYSED) – a youth-led non-profit organization committed to promoting cybersecurity awareness and capacity building for secured cyberspace.

CYSED aims at providing individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to combat global cyber threats in Africa through Digital Inclusion, Cybersecurity Awareness, Capacity Building, Cyber Diplomacy, Research, Development & Innovation, Digital Rights & data privacy.

“CYSED was established with the mission of finding innovative and sustainable ways of creating a safer digital environment by equipping individuals, organizations, and communities with the necessary tools and knowledge to defend against cyber threats and prevent cybercrime in Africa.” – Joshua Moses

CYSED hopes to achieve this by :

  • Collaborating with government, academia and private organization to advance cybersecurity education in Africa
  • Promoting international opportunities through cybersecurity scholarships, training and internships.
  • Promoting national and global cybersecurity awareness campaigns against all forms of cyber-related crime
  • Building an outsourcing hub for young cybersecurity professionals to access global projects and build rewarding careers.
  • Promoting, advancing and accelerating a safe digital transformation and inclusion
  • Initiating programs that increase access to understandable information on individual rights to data privacy.
  • Furthering the peaceful use of ICT and promote international co-operation among African states

CYSED recognizes the pressing need to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap and promote collaboration among stakeholders. “We believe that we can foster partnerships in implementing projects and programs with the support from industry leaders, private sectors and the community, helping the government to operationalise policies and working with educational institutions to foster research and development with the aims of enhancing cybersecurity practices across the board.”

The recent project was an intervention to implement a cybercrime prevention program in Lagos State for young people with a high risk of engaging in cybercrime. Through our flagship initiative (Diary of Hackers), we organized a National Cybersecurity Awareness campaign that reached over 300,000 people in 2022, we organized an annual conference for enthusiasts in cybersecurity and other initiatives as part of our quota to contribute to the safety of our digital world.
